Experimental Typographic Poster System
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Indesign | Spring 2023
OBJECTIVES
Develop an effective visual design system for an event showcasing three influential opera singers: Marian Anderson, Fairuz, and Andrea Bocelli. Unify differing components of a system yet instill excitement through it's an innovative representation of meaning.
EXPERIMENTAL TYPOGRAPHY
Before beginning to build the series digitally, I photographed related keywords through a range of experiments.

CONCEPT SKETCHES
With further research about each artist, rough concept sketches were drawn to formulate a thematic system to be applied to the series.

IDEATION
CONCEPT | DISSONANCE
Dissonance in music is when two or more tones occur simultaneously and are discordant. All three opera singers faced adversity, but spoke boldly about what they believed was right. I explored this concept by revisiting my experimental typography and choosing a keyword, each with the ability to add the prefix dis-, in order to juxtapose the discordant messages they received from society with the message they stood for.

ITERATION
In the second round of iterations, I refined the systems in which the quotes, dis-, and keyword interacted with each other to create a more cohesive series. Colors were chosen intentionally to allude to each singers' most prominent stage outfit, while flowing from warm to cool as a triptych.

FINALIZATION
In the final round of iterations, I decided to add a wave effect to the keyword and the quote to mimic a musical staff and bright, bold notes being sung, adjusted the saturations of each color to emphasize the "dissonance," and added tertiary colors to differentiate the quotes.

ANIMATED PIECE
To take this project further, I created an animated version of Marian Andersons' poster to be used as an advertisement in public spaces or on social media.
